Water

Water is the backbone of the green spaces in Mata do Bussaco. The ensemble is located above sea level and its proximity to the Atlantic Sea make for a humid atmosphere which becomes an abundance of little streams and underwater currents that provide just the right amount of water to maintain the forest in exceptional condition.

In the northern area near to the palace hotel, there is a route connecting some of the water features, including Carregal, São Silvestre, São Elías and Santa Teresa fountains.

The presence of water, however, truly comes into its own in Fonte Fría spring. In this area, visitors can find a succession of small waterfalls navigating the different levels in the terrain as they flow along the path of the twin steps and into the two lakes. The lakes are surrounded by some of the ensemble’s most spectacular species of tree growing in an exotic and astounding landscape in which huge ferns predominate.

The water flows down beyond the boundary walls to Luso, a local town renowned for the quality and properties of its water.
