The JARCULTUR project

In 2019, the INTERREG Management Committee gave the go-ahead to the JARCULTUR project for cooperation between Spain and Portugal. It includes a range of protection, recovery and dissemination activities associated with the historical gardens of Béjar Forest and Mata do Bussaco in Portugal.

The aim is for cultural and natural heritage to become one of the driving forces behind promotion of the economy and tourist trade in the Centro-Castilla y León territory with Coimbra and Salamanca as central points of attraction.

The project participants are the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Castilla y León autonomous government, Mata do Bussaco Foundation and Béjar local council.

It undertakes to perform a range of shared activities that seek to disseminate information and knowledge about Mata do Bussaco and Béjar Forest historical gardens, and to promote both sites. The activities include:

  • Creation of an online space  https://patrimoniocultural.jcyl.es/web/es/proyectos-intervenciones/proyecto-transfronterizo-jarcultur.html. Participation in the biennial AR&PA Cultural Heritage events with trilingual (Portuguese, Spanish and English) promotion material.
  • Guided tours and didactic workshops for school children aimed at getting younger generations more involved in understanding natural and cultural resources and how they can be conserved.
  • Organisation of congresses and events for cultural heritage site managers with the aim of sharing the results obtained from recovery of the gardens.
  • Creation of an itinerant monographic exhibition transmitting the value of the heritage at these sites.
  • Printed and digital publications for dissemination on the webpage and at scheduled events.
