En el t\u00e9rmino municipal de Almeida de Sayago se encuentra el que pasa por ser el dolmen m\u00e1s monumental hallado hasta la fecha en la provincia de Zamora. Aunque muy alterado, incluso por su reutilizaci\u00f3n en \u00e9poca prehist\u00f3rica, se reconoce gracias a las excavaciones arqueol\u00f3gicas la estructura original del enterramiento colectivo.<\/p>\n

Se trata de un t\u00edpico dolmen de corredor con el pasillo de acceso a la c\u00e1mara orientado hacia el sureste que permit\u00eda el acceso a una c\u00e1mara construida por grandes lajas hincadas de granito. Las losas, de enormes dimensiones, delimitan un espacio circular de aproximadamente 6 metros de di\u00e1metro. Por su parte, el t\u00famulo que cobijaba el monumento sobrepasa los 25 metros de di\u00e1metro.<\/p>\n

Los materiales hallados sugieren que se construye en el IV milenio a.C. A esta fase se atribuyen varias cer\u00e1micas, objetos de s\u00edlex y cuarzo \u2013un elemento cultual pr\u00e1cticamente exclusivo de los ajuares funerarios dolm\u00e9nicos\u2013 o las cuentas de collar de variscita. Clausurado el enterramiento colectivo neol\u00edtico, a finales de la Edad del Cobre o principios de la Edad del Bronce (finales del III milenio a.C.), se reutiliza la antigua c\u00e1mara sepulcral para ubicar all\u00ed una tumba delimitada por peque\u00f1as lajas. Aunque no se localiz\u00f3 en la cista, se piensa que un pu\u00f1al de cobre recuperado hace d\u00e9cadas en el dolmen pertenecer\u00eda al ajuar del individuo enterrado.<\/p>\n

A unos cientos de metros del monumento, en recientes investigaciones, se ha documentado una fractura natural de escasa anchura en cuyas paredes se han esculpido decenas de oquedades alineadas. Se especula con que puedan ser contempor\u00e1neas del enterramiento colectivo neol\u00edtico y que ser\u00eda un santuario en el que tendr\u00edan lugar ceremonias rituales.<\/p>\n
